Advocacy

Shut Down SDC!

Our Approach to Advocacy

  • Base building: We inspire people to serve and advocate for systemic change.

  • Amplifying stories and changing the narrative: We challenge the prevailing understanding about immigration detention by centering the experiences of people directly affected by detention and deportation.

  • Centering affected communities: We see people impacted by immigration detention as partners. We support their capacity to advocate for themselves.

  • Holding authorities accountable: We work with partner organizations to pressure the immigration detention system, including ICE, Stewart Detention Center, CoreCivic, and public officials, to uphold the rights and dignity of all those in ICE custody.

  • Ending immigration detention: We envision a world without immigration detention.

Join this movement!

  • Come to an event! Sign up for our newsletter (below), and follow us on social media to find out where we’ll be!

  • Participate in our advocacy campaigns via sharing social media posts, signing our petitions, and sending letters to elected officials. Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for toolkits and calls to action.

  • Request El Refugio to come to your house, place of worship, or community organization to speak about immigration detention.

  • Request our zine: “In Memory: Nine People Lost Their Lives at Stewart Detention Center.”

Immigration myths and misleading information leave many people misinformed.  We offer educational sessions to provide information and facilitate dialogue about immigration detention among people of various backgrounds and beliefs. The combination of learning and relationship-building works to engage people in direct service and advocacy, often inspiring people to serve at the hospitality house, visit SDC, advocate for systemic change, and support our work financially.
